Bear Leads Deputies on Chase in La Canada
A year-old black bear led sheriff’s deputies on a four-hour romp through a back-yard swimming pool and up trees in La Canada Flintridge before succumbing to the effects of tranquilizer darts.
The 3-foot-tall yearling, apparently from the nearby Angeles National Forest, is believed to be the first bear to come down from the woods in six years, said Cresenta Valley Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Hays.
After a Department of Fish and Game marksman tranquilized the bear, which was 15 feet up in a tree, the administrator of the Wildlife Way Station in the forest used a rope to lower the bear safely to the ground. But the bear awakened and tried to escape deputies’ nets for several minutes before officials captured the animal, which was unharmed and is likely to be released into the forest.
