Father, Son From County in Semifinals
The second-seeded doubles team of Jim and Brian Nelson advanced to the semifinals of the National Senior Father and Son Hardcourt Doubles championships Saturday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Stan and Geoff Griffin.
Jim, from Irvine, and Brian, from Huntington Beach, were tested for the first time in the tournament after receiving a bye in the first round and getting through the second round, losing only one game. The Nelsons will face third-seeded Bill and Kurt Streng from Michigan, who advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Larry and John Huebner.
In the other semifinal, eighth-seeded Jim and Jim Settles from Laguna Niguel and Glendale will face top-seeded Spencer and John Letts from Rolling Hills and Chicago.
The Settles advanced with a 7-6, 7-6 victory over unseeded Emil and William Bereczky. The Letts advanced with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over sixth-seeded Norman and James Slaught.
The semifinals begin at 9:30 a.m., with the championship match set to start at 12:30 p.m.
