Steinbrenner signed Strawberry? Hey, P.T. Barnum, chalk up another one!

Bill Veeck might have irritated the powers of baseball, but he satisfied the fans.

Charlie Finley might have been brash and flamboyant, but he satisfied the fans.

George Steinbrenner is both irritating and brash, but he satisfies only his wallet.

If Al Capone could hit .300 and get 80 RBIs, George Steinbrenner would sign him.

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?

Pete Rose suspended from baseball for life--Darryl Strawberry signed by the Yankees.

The message is that if Pete Rose had taken drugs he would be in the Hall of Fame--or manager of the Yankees.

Mike Downey just doesn’t get it. The reason players like Strawberry, Howe and others never learn is because they never have to learn. Downey blames Steinbrenner, he blames Strawberry’s agent, he blames everyone (except, of course, sportswriters) for Darryl’s problems. We are again hit with the theory that these poor young men are the victims of inanimate substances, not by their own pursuit of uncontrolled pleasure.

It’s sad to know that today’s kids are being taught that no matter how much they flaunt the law, sportsmanship or common decency, there is an army of people who will make excuses for them.

Tommy Lasorda was right about Darryl Strawberry’s return to baseball. Barry Bonds and Dusty Baker ought to focus on America instead of Strawberry. This country and its kids deserve and need heroes who uphold the law. Strawberry embodies values that destroy lives.
