This school’s educational program will be as unusual as its history: Former Navy housing on Long Beach’s west side will become a school for ninth-graders only.

Class size at Savannah Academy will be limited to 25-29 students, compared to a Long Beach Unified School District average of 32. Classes will be 90 minutes long instead of the usual 53 minutes. The curriculum will focus on academic skills--only reading, writing, math and computer literacy will be taught.

The school will open this fall on the grounds of the former Savannah Navy housing development. The Navy abandoned the housing complex with its boxy duplexes about three years ago.

Ten of those single-story duplexes--donated by the Navy and refurbished with new carpets, air conditioning and computers--will become Long Beach Unified’s 84th school.

Long Beach students who will be ninth-graders this year can apply by calling 436-9931, Ext. 6840.
