A Tustin man suspected of shooting and killing his girlfriend before shooting himself was in guarded but stable condition Sunday in the intensive care unit at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, a hospital official said.

Tustin Police Lt. Houston Williams said Sunday that he expects Kirkland O’Hara to make a full recovery, but could not say when or if O’Hara would be arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of 34-year-old Dawn Hill.

Hill was shot in the chest in a condominium in the 2000 block of Cherokee Street, according to the Orange County coroner’s office. She was dead upon arrival Saturday night at Western Medical Center.

Police said the shooting, which took place about 6 p.m. Saturday, was an incident of domestic violence but refused to comment on the circumstances, including whether O’Hara attempted to take his own life. O’Hara shot himself in the upper body, police said.

Hill’s 8-year-old son, who at the time of the shooting was downstairs in the condominium Hill shared with O’Hara, was unhurt and was with his father Sunday, Williams said.
