SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

For the second consecutive week, a feature race at Ventura Raceway was interrupted by a serious accident.

A car driven by Al Adam of Westlake Village flipped into the wall in Turn 3 and burst into flames on the first lap of the 20-lap Street Stock main event, which was eventually won by points leader Greg Voigt of Goleta.

The roof of Adam’s car was completely caved in but he escaped the vehicle unharmed before it became totally engulfed in flames.

It took safety crews more than five minutes to extinguish the blaze and another 10 minutes to clean up.

When the race was restarted, four-time defending track champion Paul Moore took the lead and Voigt took second place on Lap 5.

Voigt challenged Moore for the lead with five laps left and took the lead a lap later, bumping Moore on an inside pass in the second turn.

It was Voigt’s third consecutive victory at the quarter-mile clay oval and his sixth overall.

Eddie Patterson of Oak View won his second 15-lap Mini Stock main event.

In the 15-lap Pony Stock feature, Jim Jewett Jr. of Ventura earned his second victory.

International Motor Contest Assn. national points leader Ryan Cole of Santa Maria won the 20-lap Modified main event.
