STREAMLINE: American Art Deco Graphic Design by Steven Heller and Louise Fili (Chronicle Books: $16.95; 132 pp., paperback original). Heller and Fili’s ongoing survey of Art Deco graphics has become an important resource for illustrators and designers. During the ‘20s and ‘30s, print advertising campaigns began to sell the experience of speed, glamour or progress, rather than the product itself. Typefaces, appliances and packaging all reflected the streamlined Deco style: A 1930 Listerine bottle looks like a miniature pavilion from the New York World’s Fair.
