Collapse of Hillside Threatens Apartments
A crumbling hillside endangered five small apartment buildings in El Sereno on Saturday, forcing 100 people from their homes and causing a parking lot to collapse.
Firefighters ordered the evacuation after the slope below the buildings began to give way. Up to 4,000 cubic yards of soil slid down during the afternoon, threatening to carry one or more of the Grey Drive buildings along with it.
