Jimmy Powell became the first player to win both the Super Seniors competition and a Senior PGA Tour event when he shot a five-under-par 67 Sunday to win the First of America Classic at Ada, Mich.

Powell, 60, of La Quinta, finished with a 15-under-par 201 at the 6,864-yard Egypt Valley Country Club, five strokes better than Babe Hiskey and six ahead of Larry Laoretti.

The victory made Powell the oldest player to win on the tour since Mike Fetchick won the 1985 Hilton Head Seniors’ Championship at age 63.

“I have felt really good all year and I hit my irons real well this week,” Powell said. “I had only two or three irons that weren’t right at the hole.”

The Super Seniors, which Powell won Saturday, is a separate event within each tournament for players 60 and over. It began nine years ago.

Powell picked up $15,000 for his Super Senior victory, then got another $105,000 Sunday for winning the $700,000 tournament.

Ed Dougherty made a slick downhill putt for birdie at the 71st hole, then also birdied the 18th en route to a two-stroke victory in the Deposit Guaranty Classic in Madison, Miss.

His six-under-par 66 at the 7,157-yard Annandale Golf Club gave him a 16-under 272 for the tournament and his first PGA Tour victory. Gil Morgan, who shot a 69, finished second at 274.

The victory was worth $126,000 and a two-year exemption for Dougherty, meaning the 47-year-old can play on the PGA Tour until he is eligible for the Senior PGA Tour in late 1997. The paycheck was more than Dougherty made in 12 of his 15 previous seasons.

“I’ve been in the last group before and the ovation has always been for someone else,” Dougherty said. “I didn’t get caught up in it, but it was something.”

Pete Jordan finished three strokes behind after a 68 that included two eagles.

Tracy Kerdyk scored her first LPGA Tour victory, winning the Big Apple Classic by four strokes at Wykagl Country Club in New Rochelle, N.Y., to pocket the $105,000 first prize.

Kerdyk, 29, despite a 59-minute rain delay, shot a four-under-par 68 to finish with a record-tying 11-under 273. Finishing tied for second were third-round leader Carin Hjalmarsson of Sweden; Elaine Crosby; Caroline Pierce of England, and Michelle McGann.
