The head of a group seeking to block the Raiders’ return asked an Alameda County court Tuesday to undo the deal that brought the football team back to Oakland.

Joe Debroe, president of Taxpayers for a Vote on the Raiders Deal, contends the city and county are making an illegal, multimillion-dollar gift of public funds to Raider owner Al Davis.

Debroe, a contractor, also alleges an $85-million renovation contract for the Oakland Coliseum was given to a builder friend of Davis without competitive bidding.

Cleveland Brown quarterback Vinny Testaverde was released from the hospital after missing more than a week of training camp because of a leg infection.

Testaverde was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic Aug. 8 after complaining of inflammation and pain after being spiked in the shin early in camp. Compounding the situation, medication the eight-year veteran had taken for the infection had triggered an allergic reaction.

A team doctor said Testaverde would not play in the team’s exhibition game Saturday against Atlanta but will return to a regular practice schedule next week.

Cleveland Coach Bill Belichick said rookie Eric Zeier will get his second exhibition start in place of Testaverde.

Pittsburgh Steeler safety Carnell Lake ended a 25-day holdout, signing a four-year contract for $9.2 million that includes a $2-million signing bonus.

Lake, who was originally drafted by the Steelers in the second round in 1989 out of UCLA, has recorded 478 tackles and seven interceptions during his career.

The team also re-signed linebacker Levon Kirkland to a four-year deal worth $6 million and are reportedly closing in on a long-term deal for tackle Leon Searcy, who has a year left on his contract.

With Houston Oiler owner Bud Adams threatening to move the team to Tennessee, Jim Kollaer, president of the Greater Houston Partnership, said he’s skeptical that the local business community wants to build a stadium for Adams.

Cornerback Kirby Jackson, who played in three Super Bowls with Buffalo, was one of four players released by the Seattle Seahawks.
