Park’s Neighbors Get a Break on Labor Day Parking
Residents of the Mile Square Regional Park neighborhood will get some relief from traffic congestion over the coming Labor Day holiday.
The City Council on Tuesday approved a preferential parking permit program to make sure that residents’ cars will have space on the streets when large crowds converge on the park.
“It will help to keep the neighborhood from being overrun with cars,” said Mayor Guy Carrozzo.
Park Ranger Jerry Lahart said 5,000 to 6,000 people are expected to visit the park on Labor Day, Sept. 4. On a typical holiday weekend, he said, parking areas inside the park fill up, sending visitors to neighborhood streets to find space. Others seek street parking first, he said, to avoid paying Mile Square’s $5 auto fee.
Community Services Manager Sally Franz said free parking permits will be distributed in neighborhoods closest to the park. Additional permits for guest parking will be available at the Police Department.
