VENTURA : 8 Are Injured in Fire That Destroyed House

Five residents and three firefighters were injured Saturday morning as a result of a house fire that destroyed a home in west Ventura, fire department officials said.

At 9 a.m., the Ventura Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 161 W. McFarlane Drive.

When they arrived at the residence, firefighters found a single-story house in flames and five injured people, who were taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center and Community Memorial Hospital.

Three of the residents were treated and released. An adult woman received second-degree burns and a 2-year-old suffered smoke inhalation. Both were in guarded condition Saturday evening, according to hospital officials.

While putting out the blaze, three firefighters received shocks from electric wires. They were not seriously injured and were expected to return to duty later in the day, officials said.

Damage to the house is estimated at $103,000. The cause of the fire in under investigation.
