BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Daulton Undergoes Right Knee Surgery

Philadelphia Phillie catcher Darren Daulton underwent a two-hour operation to repair a torn ligament in his right knee, an injury that ended the all-star’s 1995 season last week.

“The tear was incomplete and not as bad as the one he had some time ago in his left knee,” team physician Phillip Marone said.

Daulton, who has had seven operations on his left knee, is expected to be ready for spring training next February.

Cleveland activated designated hitter Dave Winfield and outfielder Ruben Amaro from the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Albie Lopez from triple-A Buffalo, expanding the Indians’ roster to 28. Winfield had suffered a strained rotator cuff in his left shoulder and Amaro had a strained hamstring.

Atlanta Brave Manager Bobby Cox looked relaxed and signed autographs in a Cobb County courtroom moments before a judge dismissed wife battery charges against him. Cox, with his wife, Pamela, beside him, told Superior Court Magistrate Richard Faber that counseling has been “a great help” to his marriage. Cox, 54, had been charged for allegedly striking his wife in May at their home. Simple battery charges had been put on hold for 90 days pending counseling. . . . The San Francisco Giants activated right-handed pitcher Luis Aquino (strained right pectoral muscle) from the disabled list and promoted four players from Phoenix of the Pacific Coast League. Right-handed pitcher Carlos Valdez, infielder David McCarty and outfielder Rikkert Faneyte were recalled from Phoenix and the contract of outfielder Mark Leonard was purchased from Phoenix by the Giants. The Giants designated right-handed pitcher Kenny Greer for assignment.
