Fernandez Hits for Cycle, but Yankees Lose
Tony Fernandez became the first New York Yankee to hit for the cycle in 23 years, but Rickey Henderson’s home run in the 10th inning gave the Oakland Athletics a 10-9 victory and stopped the Yankees’ five-game winning streak.
Fernandez became the 10th Yankee to hit for the cycle and first since Bobby Murcer on Aug. 29, 1972.
Fernandez homered in the fourth inning, singled in the fifth, tripled in the seventh and doubled in the ninth.
“Anybody who does it has to take some satisfaction, but when you lose, what can you do?” Fernandez said. “It would have been nicer if we had won the game.”
Fernandez scored the tying run in the ninth on Wade Boggs’ sacrifice fly off Dennis Eckersley (4-4). Boggs came within a home run of hitting for the cycle.
