Like the weather 100 miles north of here, Chris McCarron continues to sizzle.

Seeking his first riding title at Del Mar since 1984, McCarron had only one winner Sunday, but he made it his 10th stakes success of the meeting on Borodislew in the $313,100 Chula Vista Handicap.

Taking advantage of a fast pace in front of him, McCarron collared even-money favorite Lakeway early in the stretch, then prevailed after a fierce duel to win by a head in 1:41 4/5 for the 1 1/16 miles.

This was the third consecutive victory for Borodislew, a 5-year-old Seattle Slew mare, since Eduardo Inda began training her a little more than two months ago. She won the Terlingua at Hollywood Park before winning the Bayakoa Handicap here on July 31.

Tied with Corey Nakatani for the lead in the jockey standings, McCarron said he will decide by this morning whether he’ll appeal a five-day suspension he was handed by the stewards Sunday after being disqualified from first to second on Beau Jingles in Saturday’s third race.

If McCarron doesn’t appeal, his suspension will begin Thursday and run through Sept. 11. He could then return to ride the final day of the meeting, Sept. 13.

In the Grade II Chula Vista, Lakeway ran with Wild Lightning--who wound up being eased--through fast fractions (22 1/5 seconds, 45, 1:09 1/5 for six furlongs), responded when challenged by Borodislew and lost in a photo finish. Lakeway finished more than two lengths in front of Golden Klair. Then came Top Rung, Angi Go and Wild Lightning.

Trainer Neil Drysdale will try for stakes victories on both coasts today when he sends out French Deputy in the $200,000 Jerome Handicap at Belmont Park, then comes back with Via Lombardia in the $300,000 Del Mar Derby.

Unbeaten in three starts, French Deputy will be making his first start since Feb. 23 in the one-mile Jerome and will be ridden by Gary Stevens.

Locally, Via Lombardia will race with Lasix for the first time in the Derby, which is run at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, and he is the 2-1 favorite against nine other 3-year-olds.

Lake George, perfect in two turf starts, is the 3-1 second choice. He will be trying for his second stakes victory of the meeting after taking the first division of the Oceanside Stakes on July 26, Del Mar’s opening day.

The rest of the field, from the inside out, includes Da Hoss, who is also unbeaten in two races on the grass; Semi Maar, who has won five of his last six and three of four since being claimed for $10,500; Tabor, Beau Temps, Native Regent, Sharpest Image, Longliner and Pinfloron.

Horse Racing Notes

The prohibitive 1-5 favorite, Serena’s Song rolled to an easy victory in the $150,000 Gazelle on Sunday at Belmont Park. Ridden by Gary Stevens for trainer Wayne Lukas and owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, the 3-year-old Rahy filly completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47 1/5 and has won eight of 10 starts this year.
