PREP FOOTBALL ’95 / FRONTIER LEAGUE : SOUTHERN SECTION

Share

FACTS AND FIGURES: Moorpark begins its fourth season in the Frontier League and third at its home field, Moorpark Memorial Community Stadium. The Musketeers have lost there only once, to Santa Ynez. . . .Moorpark senior quarterback Bryan Paul (6 feet 4, 195 pounds) should shine as the Musketeers move from a ground-based attack to a balanced scheme. Paul passed for more than 1,500 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in his first season as a starter. . . .The Musketeers return only one of their top four receivers from last season. . . Four of five starting offensive linemen return for Moorpark, including Brandon Silva (6-0, 215) at center and Zack Heath (6-3, 238) at right tackle. Both are seniors who earned second-team all-league honors in 1994. . . .Nordhoff will be led by the diminutive but ferocious Russell Farrar (5-9, 180), a strong safety who received all-league, all-county, and All-Southern Section honors last season. He will also play fullback this season, blocking for senior halfback Greg Coleman (5-10, 175) in the Rangers’ Delaware wing T offense. . . .Calabasas welcomes back 10 defensive starters including second-team all-league tackle Tim Lyons (5-10, 213), a senior. On offense, the Coyotes will look to senior tight end Jeff Arnell (6-0, 185), an all-league pick. . . .The Santa Clara offense will be piloted by sophomore Adrian Maciel (5-11, 180 pounds), the youngest of four brothers who have played for the Saints. . . .Santa Paula Coach Paul Spinner is ecstatic about the return of senior running back Victor Meza (5-5, 150), who rushed for more than 500 yards in 1993 before personal problems prevented him from playing last fall. Teaming with Meza in the backfield will be junior Aaron Pettitt (6-2, 220), a second team all-league offensive tackle last season. Santa Paula has been bolstered by the addition of senior Rocky Frutos (6-0, 175), a standout baseball player who will start at safety and back up sophomore quarterback Willy Zavala (6-0, 150).

LAST YEAR: Nordhoff advanced to the Division IX title game after winning its third league title in four years. . . .Cliff Farrar, The Times’ 1994 Ventura County coach of the year, has guided Nordhoff to a 41-19 record in the 1990s. . . .The Rangers must replace Josh Hawkins, The Times’ 1994 Ventura County back of the year. Hawkins rushed for an area-best 2,454 yards and scored 36 touchdowns. . . .Moorpark must replace running back Bryan Wilkins (1,621 yards, 23 touchdowns).

KEY RETURNERS: Moorpark: Bryan Paul, quarterback; Brandon Silva, center; Zack Heath, right tackle. Nordhoff: Russell Farrar, strong safety/fullback; Ryan Rodriguez, offensive lineman/outside linebacker. Calabasas: Tim Lyons, defensive tackle; Jeff Arnell, tight end. Santa Clara: Jeff Wondoloski, guard/linebacker. Santa Paula: Aaron Pettitt, fullback/linebacker.

OUTLOOK: The league title quest should again be a dogfight between Moorpark and Nordhoff with the Musketeers maintaining a slight edge. . . .Calabasas hopes a veteran defense can produce another middle-of-the-pack finish. . . .Whether Santa Clara and Santa Paula can improve in increments or large strides depends heavily on their sophomore quarterbacks and an ability to stay injury-free.
