With 40 new pieces of music to chose from, Peter Gabriel will start official work on his next album in November. No release date has been set. . . . Heading into the studio next month is the Dave Matthews Band, to work with producer Steve Lillywhite on the follow-up to the group’s 2-million-selling major-label debut, “Under the Table and Dreaming.” Meanwhile, a live, five-song EP (with two previously unreleased songs) is due in November. . . .

New songs by Bush, Weezer, Silverchair, Wax, Belly and Sponge will be featured on the soundtrack album for the movie “Mallrats,” directed by Kevin Smith (“Clerks”) and starring Shannen Doherty and skateboard champ Jason Lee. Also on the album, due Oct. 10, are songs by Elastica, All, Girls Against Boys and Archers of Loaf. . . .

A live Victoria Williams album, recorded at an April concert in Toronto and featuring the harmonies of the Williams Brothers (no relation), is due Oct. 10. . . . Country star George Strait, while waiting for the release of his 72-track box set at the end of this month, is heading for the studio with producer Tony Brown to work on a new album. . . .

Erasure’s upcoming album, “Erasure,” features two guest vocal appearances by multi-octaved singer/performance artist Diamanda Galas. It’s due Oct. 24.
