In another nonleague game:
El Modena 36, Garden Grove 16--With less than five minutes gone in the first quarter, El Modena turned three Garden Grove miscues into touchdowns and cruised from there to a victory at Grove Stadium.
On the opening kickoff, the Vanguards’ Charlie Walters scooped up Kevin Griswold’s fumble on the return and took it 20 yards for the touchdown.
The ensuing kickoff was fumbled again and El Modena’s Jason Said recovered it on the Vanguard 25. It took El Modena three plays to score as quarterback Cesar Vasquez hooked up with Bobby Calderon on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Running back Aaron Santana plunged in from two yards out to make the score 22-0 with 10:16 remaining in the first quarter.
Dan Kingman led the Vanguards in rushing with 84 yards in 16 carries. Santana rushed for 41 yards and two touchdowns.
Argonaut quarterback Troy Haller threw two second-half touchdowns. The El Modena defense limited Garden Grove to 15 yards rushing.
