BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Pirates’ Clark Comes Off Disabled List

Dave Clark returned to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ active roster, nearly seven weeks after he was injured in an outfield collision with teammate Jacob Brumfield.

Clark broke his left collarbone, suffered facial lacerations and had teeth loosened when he collided with Brumfield while chasing a fly ball at full speed on July 25 at Three Rivers Stadium.

Brumfield was slightly injured in the collision.

Houston pitcher Doug Drabek and Cincinnati outfielder Ron Gant withdrew appeals of their suspensions and immediately began serving their penalties for involvement in a series of brawls last Tuesday.

Drabek is suspended for five games, Gant four. Gant is miffed the Reds won’t pay his salary while he serves the suspension, calling the team policy “pretty horrendous” and hinted it will be a factor in contract talks after the season.

Cliff Floyd, who shattered his left wrist in a collision with New York’s Todd Hundley on May 15, was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list. The injury had been considered career-threatening. Teammate Moises Alou will have season-ending surgery on his sore right shoulder today. . . . The Baltimore Orioles activated Ben McDonald off the 15-day disabled list, although Manager Phil Regan hasn’t decided when to put the right-hander back into the starting rotation. . . . Houston Astro outfielder Derek Bell will have surgery to remove a blood clot from his left thigh and will be sidelined an additional 10 days to two weeks. Bell was injured Aug. 22 when hit by a pitch from Atlanta’s Steve Avery.
