He’s Tired of Being Conned by Boxing

The professional fight mentation has obviously become one of “take the money and run, the idiot fans will continue making it available.” The McNeeley fiasco has been equaled by the cowardice of Oscar De La Hoya’s opponent.

With the championship at stake, it appears the guaranteed $500,000 purse was sufficient to cause the fighter more concern over his nose, his beautiful child and his wife, than of his career. Some may find that admirable. It certainly is not what fight fans respect.

Underscoring the near-total disingenuous nature of the sport was the so-called heavyweight championship fight in England, which matched two large, totally skill-less individuals with a prefight introduction that would make professional wrestling ashamed of itself.

As far as I am concerned, the three-strike rule is in effect. Showtime, PPV fights, Don King and the rest of the circus con men will be making their gains no longer on me.

Genaro Hernandez did the right thing by quitting against Oscar De La Hoya. He had no chance of winning, and a good chance of becoming seriously injured. The Golden Boy continues to be the target of boos, and I’ll admit I’ve always said he’s a shooting star. But at the rate he’s going, he’ll knock out Julio Cesar Chavez. If you are one of the booers, take my advice and forget about this wish. Some stars simply aren’t meant to fall out of the sky.

To those who believe Oscar De La Hoya is a great fighter, why did he relinquish the IBF crown rather than fight the No. 1 contender? At this rate, Oscar will set a record for title defenses against junior-lightweights. Talk about someone getting a good hand . . .
