ROUNDUP : Moses Saves Pepperdine’s Victory Over Long Beach

Goalie Merrill Moses blocked Kip Parsons’ shot at the buzzer as Pepperdine held on to defeat Long Beach State, 11-10, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match Thursday at Pepperdine.

Pepperdine (4-3, 1-1 in conference), ranked No. 4 nationally, took an 11-7 lead on Larry Felix’s fourth goal of the match with 3 minutes 15 seconds to play. Parsons and Charlie Shorttscored as Long Beach State (2-3, 0-1) narrowed the lead, and Parsons scored again with 51 seconds to play. Long Beach State is ranked seventh nationally.

Junior Jack Kocur scored two two-point goals for Pepperdine. Teammate Greg Finley scored three goals, including one two-pointer.

Valley 19, Mt. San Antonio 11--Armond Abramian had seven goals and Gilbert Abramyan added five for the Monarchs (6-3-2) in a nonconference match.

Serjik Amiryan made nine saves for Valley.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian d. Hart, 15-9, 15-17, 16-14, 15-11--Lindy James had 14 kills and four aces, and Stephanie Dolbeir added five aces as the Crusaders (3-1) handed the Indians (4-1) their first defeat.

Danielle Odiorne had 14 kills and six blocks for Hart. Amber Hanson had 29 assists and 20 digs for Village Christian.

Royal d. Thousand Oaks, 11-15, 7-15, 15-5, 15-3, 17-15--Lakesha DeBerry had 10 kills and six blocks for Royal (3-1, 2-0) in a come-from-behind Marmonte League victory.

Royal’s kill leader Michelle Lampkin was forced from the match four points into the first game because of strained left knee ligaments.

Poly d. Eagle Rock, 15-10, 15-11, 15-6--Latoya Seeley had 12 kills and Marlena McLurkin had 10 kills to lead the Parrots (1-1) in a nonleague match at Eagle Rock.

North Hollywood d. Verdugo Hills, 11-15, 13-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-10--Gohar Karapogosyan had 21 kills and Takui Karapogosyan had 25 assists for the Huskies (1-1) in a come-from-behind victory.

Burroughs d. Crescenta Valley, 15-10, 15-7, 15-3--Christy Russell and Julie Pham each had nine kills for the Indians (3-2) in a nonconference match.

Notre Dame d. Marlborough 16-14, 15-5, 15-8--Briana Hadfield had nine kills and Hilda Osmanian had 26 assists and 10 digs for the Knights (5-0) at Marlborough.

Chaminade d. Bell-Jeff, 15-9, 15-11, 17-15--The Eagles (1-3) got 19 kills from Leslie Gandara and 34 assists from Nikki Cohen in the nonleague match. Bell-Jeff fell to 1-4.

Oak Park d. Louisville, 15-7, 15-4, 14-16, 15-6--Rheana Mantooth had 11 kills, Lorianne Belmont added 15 assists and Alicia Barron made seven blocks for the Eagles (4-0).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 7, Grant 0--The Lancers forfeited two matches in the nonconference loss to Granada Hills (2-0).

Kennedy 6, Franklin 1--Jamie Horwitz, Claudia Menjivar and Kelly Well scored singles victories to help the Golden Cougars (2-0) in a nonleague match.

Van Nuys 5, Chatsworth 2--Leslie Musser of Van Nuys swept her match, 8-0, from Jamie Macias to lead Van Nuys at Chatsworth.

Chatsworth sophomore Victoria Bromberg, playing her first high school match, routed Newsha Mohajeri, 8-0, in the No. 4 four singles spot.

Agoura 17, Channel Islands 1--Michele Fritz won her three matches at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-0 as the Chargers (4-1) improved to 2-0 in the Marmonte League. Channel Islands is 3-3, 0-2.

Camarillo 15, Newbury Park 3--Katy Messmer won three singles matches for the Scorpions in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park. Camarillo (2-1, 1-1) won all nine doubles’ matches.

Chaminade 18, Bishop Montgomery 0--Freshman Teresa Galido did not lose a game in three sets, moving her record to 9-0 in a Mission League sweep for Chaminade (3-0, 2-0) at Cal State Northridge.

In doubles play, junior Missy Alpert and sophomore Monica Andrews dropped just one game in three sets playing in the No. 1 slot for the Eagles.

Louisville 9, St. Joseph 9--The Royals (4-4, 2-0) were awarded the victory by a 76-70 margin in games as freshman Katie Gallant swept three sets in a Mission League victory.

Nordhoff 17, St. Bonaventure 1--Stacey Roberts recorded singles victories of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 for Nordhoff.

Cleveland 4, Monroe 3--Lydia Daniller, playing No. 1 singles for Cleveland (2-0), defeated Mimi Giagos, 8-3.

Junior Danielle Furman of Monroe (0-2) won the No. 4 singles match, 8-1.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

St. Francis 20, Alemany 35--Kevin Koeper placed first and Andy VanOrden was second for St. Francis in the Mission League meet at Griffith Park.

Koeper, third in last year’s Southern Section Division III championships, and VanOrden (ninth) each timed 15 minutes 6 seconds over the 2.9-mile course.

Steve Garcia (15:58), Scott Bergen (16:19) and Chris Lee (16:47) placed fourth, fifth and eighth for the Golden Knights (4-0, 2-0), the No. 3-ranked team in the section’s Division III poll.

Notre Dame 26, Harvard-Westlake 31--Sean Tallungan led Notre Dame to a Mission League victory at Tree People Park in Studio City. Tallungan timed 16:35 on the three-mile course.
