ROUNDUP : Golden Coast Meet Belongs to Glendale

Ramon Serratos placed seventh and four of his Glendale College teammates added top-15 finishes to propel the Vaqueros to victory in the Golden Coast Invitational cross-country meet at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa on Saturday.

Serratos, a transfer from College of the Canyons who placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the State junior college track championships in May, timed 20 minutes 15 seconds over the four-mile course.

Glendale totaled 59 points, followed by El Camino (77), Mt. San Antonio (107), Bakersfield (153) and Moorpark (208).

The Vaqueros’ other scoring runners were Jose Arias in 11th (20:39), Jose Padilla in 12th (20:40), Eduardo Macias in 14th (20:47) and Bryan Ramos in 15th (20:48).

Eleazar Hernandez, runner-up in last year’s State Division I cross-country championships for Camarillo High, placed ninth for Moorpark. Hernandez opened the season with a victory in the Hancock Invitational, but a cold Saturday slowed him to a time of 20:34.

Riverside Invitational--Brian Godsey placed 14th and Javier Ramirez was 20th as Cal State Northridge finished ninth in the meet at UC Riverside.

Godsey timed 26:12 over the five-mile course and Ramirez clocked 26:31 for the Matadors, who totaled 254 points. UC Riverside placed first with 70 points, followed by Asics Track West (86) and Yavapai College (107).

Mark LaPlant, a former standout at Palmdale High, placed fourth in 25:24 for Asics Track West.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Riverside Invitational--Lori Miller and Jamie Whitmore placed 13th and 15th to pace Cal State Northridge to a fifth-place finish in the meet at UC Riverside.

Miller clocked 19:22 over the 5,000-meter course with Whitmore at 19:24. Freshman teammate Ellen Muench placed 22nd in 19:43 as Northridge totaled 151 points.

Asics Track West won with 91 points, followed by USC (100), Grand Canyon (124) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (125).

Golden Coast Invitational--Bridget Roy of Moorpark placed sixth to lead the Raiders to a fourth-place finish in the meet at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

Roy, a freshman from Thousand Oaks High, timed 19:56 over the 5,000-meter course to help Moorpark to a 158-point total. Mt. SAC placed first with 58, followed by defending state junior college champion San Diego Mesa (74) and Whittier (99), the only four-year school in the meet.

Vicki Greene placed 20th in 20:56 for Moorpark.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Laguna Hills Invitational--Todd Disney and Josh Carolan of Thousand Oaks placed second and fourth in the senior race of the meet at Laguna Hills High.

Disney timed 15:23 over the three-mile course, with Carolan finishing in 15:39.

Blue Lagoon Invitational--Will Bernaldo, Omar Vega and Victor Ochoa of Nordhoff placed second, fourth and fifth in the non-scoring meet at UC Santa Barbara.

Bernaldo, sixth in last year’s State Division III championships, timed 15:38 over the three-mile course. Vega clocked 16:06 and Ochoa ran 16:14 for the Rangers, the two-time defending State Division III champions.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Laguna Hills Invitational--After breaking course records in her first two races of the season, Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks tied another in the meet at Laguna Hills High.

Mortensen clocked 16:49 over the three-mile course to win the senior-junior race and tie the course mark set by Milena Glusac of Fallbrook High in 1991. Glusac, who is now at Oregon, was the runner-up in the 1992 Kinney national cross-country championships.

Jessica Corbin of Irvine, who finished one place ahead of Mortensen in last year’s State Division I championships, was a minute behind her Saturday.

“I think it’s the best race that [Kim] has run,” Thousand Oaks Coach Jack Farrell said. “I think she was aware that Corbin was in the race and she accepted the challenge. . . . She still looked very under control and did not look like that was all she had.”

Tara Marsden, Mortensen’s teammate, finished seventh (19:08) in the senior-junior race and Lancer Erin Sorensen won the sophomore event in 19:23.

Blue Lagoon Invitational--Nordhoff’s Elaine Canchola, Terrah Chapin and Beth Zacher placed first, second and fourth in the non-scoring meet at UC Santa Barbara.

Canchola, runner-up in last year’s Foot Locker West Regional, timed 18:30 over the three-mile course with Chapin at 19:24 and Zacher at 20:16.

Ventura’s Alyson MacIntosh placed third in 20:07.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 17, UC Irvine 16--Junior Alan Herrmann scored as time expired in overtime for the Waves in a nonconference match at Pepperdine.

Sean Lane scored four goals and Jack Kocur added two two-point goals for Pepperdine (5-3).

Ryan Bailey, Matt Meunz and Jean Michel each had three goals for the Anteaters (4-3).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Iowa State d. Pepperdine, 15-2, 15-6, 4-15, 15-12--Nicole Sanderson had 14 kills and nine digs, but the Waves (9-4) suffered their third consecutive defeat in their final match of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tournament.

Pepperdine began the week as the nation’s 23rd-ranked team, but after sweeping Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, they were swept by San Luis Obispo on Friday and by No. 13 UC Santa Barbara earlier Saturday.

Cal Lutheran d. Claremont Mudd-Scripps, 15-6, 15-11, 15-5--Darcy White had 11 kills, Lisa Martinez had 23 assists and Tara Thomas had five kills and five digs as the Regals (6-1, 1-0 in conference) defeated the Athenas (2-7, 0-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 7, Whittier 1--Jill Gallegos scored two goals for the Regals (7-0-1, 4-0 in conference) in a SCIAC match at Cal Lutheran.

Whittier’s record slipped 0-5-1, 0-4.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 4, Whittier 2--Alluede Okohere scored two goals for the Kingsmen (3-4, 1-0 in conference), who defeated the Poets in a SCIAC match at Whittier.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Crescenta Valley 7, Buena 5--Eric Appelin and Jason Payne each scored two goals for the Falcons in the championship match of the Buena tournament at Ventura College.

Newbury Park 13, Atascadero 12--Tim Rhodes scored the winning goal with 1:13 left in sudden-death overtime to give the Panthers third place in the Buena tournament.

Righetti 14, Hoover 8--Vahag Abramyah scored five goals, but Hoover fell in the fifth-place match of the Buena tournament.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cornerstone Christian d. Dunn, 15-5, 15-9, 15-5--Karen Breshears had five kills and three aces, and Julie Siefert had seven assists and 10 aces as the Eagles (6-0) defeated the Earwigs (0-2) in a Condor League match at Cornerstone Christian.
