PRO FOOTBALL : Packers Stymie Jaguars

With two touchdown passes, Brett Favre joined some select company Sunday night.

Favre tied an NFL record held by Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas and Don Meredith when he threw for at least two scores in his 12th consecutive game, and the Green Bay defense stymied Jacksonville for a 24-14 victory.

“I guess it’s a great record,” Favre said. “As I’ve said to a bunch of people before, I’d much rather win, and when you can win and break records it’s a great feeling. We still have a long ways to go and I’d like to continue it simply because we’re putting points on the board when we get into the end zone.”

Green Bay, off to its best start since a 4-1 beginning to the strike-shortened 1982 season, could have beaten the expansion Jaguars even worse, but the Packers had a pass intercepted near the goal line, missed a field goal, failed to cover an on-side kick and gave up a long punt return that led to a Jacksonville touchdown.

Still, the Jaguar offense, rated last in the NFL, couldn’t take advantage of its chances--even with the return of former USC left tackle Tony Boselli, the No. 2 overall selection in the April draft who missed all of the preseason and the first three games because of an injured left knee.

Favre tied the record with two impressive scoring throws. His first was a six-yarder to Robert Brooks in the middle of three defenders, giving the Packers a 10-0 lead in the final minute of the first half.

After the Jaguars made the score, 17-7, Favre reached the record book by rolling to his left under pressure, throwing off the wrong foot as he was hit and unleashing a 29-yard touchdown to Anthony Morgan with 9:08 remaining.

Favre has thrown for 32 touchdowns during his 12-game streak, which began last Oct. 31.
