BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Rotation Against Rockies Still Unsettled

Share

The Dodgers, who’ll pitch Ramon Martinez and Tom Candiotti in the first two games of their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies, still haven’t decided who will pitch in Wednesday’s finale.

Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda said he’ll probably decide between Ismael Valdes and Kevin Tapani. However, Hideo Nomo, who registered 13 strikeouts in a 3-0 complete game win over the Rockies on June 29 at Dodger Stadium, might be available.

Nomo, who pitched only five innings in Sunday’s 6-2 victory over the San Diego Padres, should be well rested because he has lasted only five innings in three of his last four starts.

“We’ll see,” Lasorda said when asked if he might use Nomo. “I doubt it, but we’ll see what happens.”

Right fielder Raul Mondesi, who dropped from fifth to seventh in the batting order Saturday, might drop to eighth if left fielder Roberto Kelly continues to produce.

Kelly extended his hitting streak to eight games by going two-for-four Sunday. Kelly tripled, singled, scored a run and drove in a run. He might have had another hit, but he was robbed by third baseman Ken Caminiti in the fourth inning.

Mondesi, who had one hit in his last 16 at-bats coming into Sunday’s game, was hitless in four at-bats against the Padres as his average dropped to .279.

“Mondesi is really struggling,” Lasorda said. “He is really mired in a slump. We’re just hoping we can get him going starting tomorrow.”

Relief pitcher John Cummings was forced to leave the game after pitching to three batters in the sixth inning with a bruised left thigh. Cummings was injured when Livingstone drilled a line drive off his leg.
