PREP ROUNDUP : Woodbridge Knocks Off No. 1 Corona del Mar

Woodbridge, ranked second in the county, won seven of nine doubles sets and beat top-ranked Corona del Mar, 10-8, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Thursday at Corona del Mar.

Natalie Exon defeated Melissa Scott, 6-3, in the final singles match to clinch the victory. Exon swept her sets , defeating Nina Vaughan, 7-6, 10-8 in the tiebreaker, for Woodbridge (10-0, 1-0). Corona del Mar is 5-2, 0-1.

In Sunset League tennis:

Edison 16, Esperanza 2--Nichole Kojima swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for eighth-ranked Edison (4-3, 1-0).

In Century League boys’ cross-country:

Orange 15, Villa Park 44--Orange won its 14th consecutive league dual meet, tying a 30-year-old school record. Nick Russell and Mike Avellan won the three-mile race at Eisenhower Park in 15:49 for Orange (2-0).

Katella 16, Century 47--Juan Venegas finished in 15:44 at Irvine Park for top-ranked Katella (2-0, 1-0).

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

El Toro 28, Santa Margarita 28 (El Toro wins on sixth runner)--Becky Niske finished third in 19:30 for eighth-ranked El Toro (1-0) at O’Neill Park.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 23, Aliso Niguel 32--Mandy Schwecherl won in 20:20 for visiting Laguna Hills, which has won 25 consecutive dual meets.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Fountain Valley 1, Edison 0--Hollie Bergels scored in the first two minutes for Fountain Valley (5-2-1). Teammate Brenda Heslin had 14 saves. Edison 5-1-1.

In the second round of the Villa Park water polo tournament:

Marina 10, Riverside Arlington 5--Stever O’Rourke scored three goals for eighth-ranked Marina (8-2).

Villa Park 7, La Habra 3--Jon Pharris had eight saves to lead Villa Park (11-2). Aaron Waldrip and Peter Cornue had two goals for Villa Park.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, El Toro 0--Jill Meyers had 15 kills for visiting Huntington Beach (6-0), the top-ranked team in the county, which won, 15-4, 15-4, 15-7.

Dana Hills 3, Newport Harbor 1--Jami Bari had 23 kills and Erika Tillman 11 for ninth-ranked Dana Hills (2-3), which defeated third-ranked Newport Harbor (1-4), 15-12, 9-15, 15-12, 15-11.

Kennedy 3, Lakewood St. Joseph 2--Je’nelle Roush and Claire Lee each had 10 kills as Kennedy defeated St. Joseph, 15-7, 15-12, 4-15, 2-15, 15-10. St. Joseph is ranked eighth in Southern Section Division II.

Santa Margarita 3, Edison 1--Michelle Chambers had 20 kills, and Sabrina King 15 for No. 8 Santa Margarita (6-0). Edison falls to 5-1.

Capistrano Valley 3, Woodbridge 1--Adrienne Shimmell had 20 kills for No. 10 Capistrano Valley (4-2), which won 14-16, 15-10, 15-7, 15-2. Denise Tollefson had 20 kills for Woodbridge (2-4).
