A Ford Bronco overturned several times on the Santa Ana Freeway Saturday night, ejecting three of its seven passengers and killing two, officials said.

Three of the passengers were in critical condition and two were in moderate condition, said Orange County Fire Capt. Dan Young.

California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Angel Johnson said two cars, one in the fast lane and one in the slow lane, appear to have been racing at speeds of up to 90 m.p.h. when the car in the slow lane veered into the middle lane to avoid traffic.

The car hit the Bronco, causing it to roll at least four times down the freeway, Johnson said.

Drivers following the truck just after 7:30 p.m. told firefighters they could see passengers flying through the air as the vehicle rolled over several times on a section of the freeway south of Alton Parkway, where construction narrows the road to three lanes, Young said.

“When firefighters arrived at the scene all three lanes had people in them,” Young said. “They treated seven people, all from that truck.”

Two people thrown from the truck died at the scene, Young said.

“All of the passengers appeared to be in their late teens and early 20s,” said Young.
