THE PREPS : ROUNDUP : Villa Park Strikes Early to Sink Servite

Third-ranked Villa Park took a seven-goal lead over No. 7 Servite in the first half and went on to defeat the Friars, 15-8, in the Villa Park boys’ water polo tournament Saturday at Villa Park High. The tournament title was Villa Park’s second this season.

Kyle Baumgarner had four goals and Joey Pacelli and Aaron Waldrip each had three. Goalkeeper and tournament MVP Jon Pharris, stopped 11 shots.

Villa Park, which led, 8-1, after the first half, is 14-2.

In other Villa Park tournament games:

Servite 12, El Toro 10--Jerry Smith scored four goals and goalie Matt Mountcastle had eight saves to lead Servite over the No. 9 Chargers in a semifinal.

Marina 10, Esperanza 5--Stever O’Rourke had three goals and Darin Smith had seven saves for Marina in the fifth-place game. In an earlier game, Chris Peters had six goals to lead Marina past Bell Gardens, 14-13.

Laguna Beach 15, Santa Margarita 10--Spencer Dornin had six goals to lead Laguna Beach (7-4) in consolation action. Trevor Walsh scored four goals for Santa Margarita (7-4).

Mission Viejo 9, Trabuco Hills 5--Trey Batten scored six goals to lead Mission Viejo (6-6) in a consolation game.

Saddleback 8, Katella 4--Johnny Roy scored five goals to lead Saddleback (4-5) in a consolation game. Roy also had six goals in an earlier victory over Woodbridge, 11-7.

El Dorado 12, Riverside J.W. North 7--Kendall Benson scored six goals for El Dorado (11-7) in consolation play.

In the Magnolia water polo tournament:

Garden Grove 10, Loara 7--Josh Segelson had three goals and Jeff Colton had two for Garden Grove in a consolation game. In an earlier game, Colton had three goals and four saves as Garden Grove defeated Santa Ana, 12-10.

In boys’ nonleague water polo:

Coronado 13, Newport Harbor 12 (OT)--Midway through the second sudden-death overtime period, Coronado scored to beat the host Sailors, the second-ranked team in the county. Mike Peetz scored three goals for Newport Harbor (6-3).

At the Las Vegas girls’ volleyball tournament:

Mater Dei wins championship--Mater Dei defeated Stockton St. Mary’s, 15-12, 15-10, to capture the title at Durango High in Las Vegas. Laurie Layton and Nicole Naya were named to the all-tournament team and teammate Roberta Gehlke was named tournament MVP.

Cypress defeated Lynnbrook, 15-3, 15-10, for a consolation title.

In nonleague eight-man football:

Liberty Christian 48, Norwalk Pioneer Baptist 6--David Clouse scored two touchdowns and threw for two more to lead Liberty Christian (1-3). Clouse rushed for 57 yards and passed for 92 yards.

David Trujillo added two touchdowns on runs of five and six yards.
