Southeast/ Long Beach : TAKING FLIGHT

Share

With inaugural flights to Houston and Atlanta, Long Beach-based Presidential Air raised hopes this week for the city’s troubled airport.

The airline’s two Airbus A300s are flying light, officials said, but customers have begun booking flights for November and December. Owners of the new airline plan to expand service from two to four flights daily once they purchase more planes and begin service to Chicago, Seattle, Orlando and perhaps Mexico City.

The fledgling airline carries with it the hopes of Long Beach Airport officials. Four major airlines moved out of Long Beach five years ago, back when 41 flights left the city daily. Today the airport hosts eight daily flights and only one major airline, America West.

Another new airline, Sterling One, hopes to soar off the Long Beach runway in December with two flights daily.
