Wade Boggs’ two-run homer in Game 1 was only the 104th of his 14-year major league career, and he also added a double Tuesday that traveled about 400 feet, a rare display of power for the slap-and-gap-hitting third baseman. But Boggs wasn’t particularly proud of either.

“A home run for me is a mistake, because I’d have to be so far out in front of a pitch that it means I was probably fooled,” said Boggs, a five-time American League batting champion. “If I continue to do that, I’m going to top balls to second base and shortstop, pop up. I can’t be the type of hitter I’ve been since Little League if I did that.”
