COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pool Keys SCC Teams’ Sweep at Cross-Country Invitational

Southern California College swept both divisions of the Southern California College Cross-Country Invitational Saturday. Nikee Pool finished first in 18 minutes 19 seconds over five kilometers on the Back Bay Course in Newport Beach.

Vanguard teammates Heather Salisbury (19:49) and Erin Culver (20:00) were second and third. The women finished with 17 points.

Southern California’s Larry Holland tied teammate Jason Schaefer for the top men’s finish at 26:03 in the eight-kilometer race. SCC’s Tim Hardin (26:07) and Wes Hinson (26:52) finished third and fourth.

Concordia (46 points) finished second.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Chapman 3, Elizabethtown of Pennsylvania 0--Shawn Parkinson had 14 kills as the Panthers (11-6) swept, 15-8, 15-7, 15-5.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, San Jose State 2--Brita Schwerm had 28 kills and freshman Kristy Kierulff (Esperanza) added 16 digs to lead the 49ers, 12-15, 15-8, 15-5, 13-15, 15-10.

Pacific 3, UC Irvine 0--Popi Edwards had 11 kills in a loss for UC Irvine (4-12, 1-8), 17-15, 15-7, 15-7. Pacific, ranked 16th in the nation, improved to 10-5 overall, 5-3 in conference.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Fresno Pacific 0, Southern California College 0--Brent Rogers stopped six shots to help Southern California College (7-7-1, 2-2-1) earn the tie with first-place Fresno Pacific (8-3-2, 4-0-1).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Chapman 3, The Master’s 1--Eric Parizek, Eric Hurtarte and Gary Hurtarte each scored in the first half for Chapman (10-3).

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:

UC Irvine 14, UC Santa Barbara 10--Craig Watson, Jeff Andrews and Ryan Bailey scored four points each to lead fourth-ranked UC Irvine past the 13th-ranked Gauchos.
