ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Kicks Sagehens Around, 5-1

Jan Hammervold and Sebastian Alvarado each scored two goals, and Aluede Okokhere added one as Cal Lutheran improved to 7-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 5-1 men’s soccer victory over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at Cal Lutheran.

The Kingsmen (9-5-1) will be top-seeded in next weekend’s SCIAC playoff tournament at a site to be determined.

Pomona-Pitzer is 6-7, 4-3.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 3, Pomona-Pitzer 0--Jill Gallegos scored a pair of first-half goals and Jennifer Tuck added a second-half score as the Regals (12-2-2, 8-0-1) defeated the Sagehens in a SCIAC match at Pomona-Pitzer.

Pepperdine 3, Loyola Marymount 2--Junior Jennifer Evans scored two second-half goals for the Waves (3-7-2, 1-4) in a West Coast Conference match at Malibu.

Tabitha Garibay scored on an assist by Sally Fingar midway through the first half to give the Waves a 1-0 lead.

Evans’ goals broke ties of 1-1 and 2-2. She scored the game-winner on an assist from Eva Popper with four minutes to play.

Kristi Giordano and Jessica Lyon scored for Loyola Marymount (5-8-1, 1-3).

Loyola Marymount outshot Pepperdine, 20-14.

Brigham Young 3, CS Northridge 1--Stephanie Jones and Camille Henry scored in the second overtime of the nonconference match at BYU.

Kim Lamoree scored for the Matadors (4-8-2) in the 37th minute to tie the match, 1-1. Kristen Johnson assisted on Lamoree’s goal.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

USC 11, Pepperdine 4--Simun Cimerman and Hrvoje Cizmic each scored two goals for the Trojans (14-2, 3-2) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.

Larry Felix scored two goals for Pepperdine (7-7, 1-3). Pepperdine goalie Merril Moses made 10 saves.

Grossmont 9, Ventura 5--Andy Bruininga scored two goals, but the Pirates (18-5-1) were beaten by Grossmont (22-1) in the championship match of the Long Beach City College tournament.

Paolo Teixeira had 12 saves for Ventura.

The Pirates advanced to the title match with an 11-9 victory over top-ranked Golden West (18-3-1) in the semifinals.

Bruininga had five goals and John Argel added four for Ventura. Teixeira had 15 saves.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational--Rio Mesa’s Aldo Hernandez, Ronald Almaguer and Scott Johnsen placed third, seventh and eighth to pace the Spartans to victory in the Division II race.

Hernandez timed 16:50 over the 5,000-meter course at Cal Poly, with Almaguer and Johnsen at 17:00 and 17:01.

Jeff O’Neil and Donald Almaguer--Ronald’s twin--rounded out Rio Mesa’s scoring in 17th and 26th as the Spartans totaled 60 points to defeat Encinitas Torrey Pines (67) and Santa Maria Righetti (77).

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational--Melanie Evans placed ninth and Cyndyann Albaugh finished 16th as Rio Mesa finished fourth in the Division II race.

Evans timed 21:12 and Albaugh clocked 21:26 over the 5,000-meter course.

Rio Mesa had 121 points to trail Encinitas Torrey Pines (66), Walnut Creek Northgate (72) and Santa Barbara (73).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cornerstone Christian d. Hillcrest, 15-10, 15-10, 4-15, 15-9--The Eagles overcame a 6-0 deficit in the first game and rode the momentum to a nonleague victory.

Julie Siefert had eight kills and 14 digs while Julia Tamai had eight aces, 11 assists and 16 digs for the Eagles (11-1).

Villanova Prep d. Laguna, 12-15, 15-6, 16-14, 10-15, 15-8--Carrie Cox had 16 kills and Melissa Montgomery added 10 kills and 25 assists for the Wildcats (6-3, 5-2) in a Condor League match.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. Santa Clara, 15-7, 15-10, 15-8--Kindra Shaffer had 15 kills and a .682 hitting percentage as the Waves (14-6, 4-1) swept the Broncos (6-14, 3-3) in a West Coast Conference match.
