A North Hills beauty salon operator fatally shot a burglar who awakened him Friday morning as he slept in the salon, Los Angeles police said.

The burglar, a 24-year-old Van Nuys man whose name was not released pending notification of his family, broke a window at the beauty salon in the 16000 block of Parthenia Street about 6 a.m., waking the owner, who was asleep in a small room at the rear of the shop, Detective Marshall White said.

The 29-year-old proprietor, whose name was not released to protect him from retaliation, grabbed a pistol and walked to the front of the store, White said.

“It was so dark, he could just tell the guy was there and moving,” White said. The owner fired at the robber, who stumbled outside and died in a nearby alley.

White said the owner was questioned and released and that the shooting appeared to be justifiable self-defense.

He said the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office would decide whether to charge the owner.
