ROUNDUP : Glendale’s Serratos Runs Past Rival

Ramon Serratos of Glendale College ran his season record to 3-2 against Moorpark’s Eleazar Hernandez and the Vaqueros placed five runners among the top nine finishers Friday to win the second Western State Conference cross-country meet of the season.

Serratos timed 20 minutes 32 seconds over the four-mile course at Waller Park in Santa Maria, followed by Bakersfield’s Ray Sanchez (20:36), Hernandez (20:37) and Glendale teammate Eduardo Macias (20:38).

Hernandez won last week’s Santa Barbara Invitational with Serratos fourth, but the Glendale sophomore powered away from him in the final half-mile.

“The first mile was too slow,” Glendale Coach Eddie Lopez said of the 5:11 split. “But things turned out OK for us. We ran well.”

Jose Padilla, Jose Arias and Bryan Ramos finished fifth (20:49), sixth (21:10) and ninth (21:23) as the Vaqueros totaled 25 points to remain undefeated in seven meets. Bakersfield was second with 49 points, followed by Moorpark and Santa Barbara City, each with 102.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Western State Conference Meet No. 2--Bridget Roy of Moorpark placed third and Christine Wiegert finished ninth to propel the Raiders to victory in the meet at Waller Park in Santa Maria.

Roy, a freshman from Thousand Oaks High, timed 19:22 over the 5,000-meter course and Wiegert clocked 20:10. Moorpark scored 50 points, Bakersfield finished second with 75, followed by Ventura (80), Mission (92) and Glendale (107).

Josefina Sanchez placed second in 19:01 for Ventura with Glendale’s Silva Vartoomian fourth in 19:58.

Niki Kennerly (20:22), Vicki Greene (20:28) and Tricia Helton (20:45) rounded out Moorpark’s scoring, placing 11th, 13th and 14th.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Lutheran d. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 15-2, 15-1, 15-10--Junior middle blocker Karen Kasper came off the bench and shook off the effects of flu to record 13 kills and lead the visiting Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. Tracy Little had 10 kills and 12 digs, Liz Martinez had 28 assists and Kim Bauer added 22 digs for the Regals (17-2, 7-0).

Ventura d. Moorpark, 15-11, 15-17, 15-11, 15-8--Jenny Mangels had 17 kills and Marina Miranda added 37 assists and 25 digs for Moorpark in a Western State Conference match.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence d. Oakwood, 15-7, 15-4, 16-14--Christen Nashau had 12 kills and Danielle Botz added 11 for the Pioneers (9-4, 6-1) in a Liberty League match. Providence’s Jenny Velasco had 33 assists.

Crossroads d. Campbell Hall, 3-15, 15-4, 15-7, 15-13--Amanda Taggart had nine kills and Casey Ragland added eight for the Vikings (3-7, 1-4) in a Delphic League match at Memorial Park in Santa Monica.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Pepperdine 9, UC Santa Barbara 8--Brian Sciutto scored with five seconds remaining to lift the Waves in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Pepperdine. Two Santa Barbara players were ejected four seconds earlier, giving the Waves (8-7, 2-3) a two-man advantage.

Alan Herrmann had three goals and Larry Felix added two for Pepperdine, which snapped a four-match losing streak and won for the fifth time this season by one goal.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 31, Alemany 4--J.J. Arden scored five goals for the host Wolverines (14-4, 7-0) in a Mission League blowout.

David Stone and Chris Cha each added four goals, and Brian Peterson recorded five saves.

Crespi 15, Notre Dame 7--The Celts outscored Notre Dame, 8-1, in the second half to break open a close Mission League match at Valley College. Chris Helin scored eight goals and Nick Conti four for Crespi (8-13, 3-3).

Joel Everman led Notre Dame (1-15, 0-6) with six.

Royal 24, Westlake 3--Kris Kunkel, Bill Bruininga and Dave Radka each scored five goals, and Chris Richeson added four for the Highlanders (18-4, 5-0) in a Marmonte League match at Royal.

Newbury Park 19, Thousand Oaks 8--Tim Rhodes and Matt McGurk each had five goals for the host Panthers (12-6, 3-2), and goalie Chris Adams made 13 saves in a Marmonte League match.

Jay Nunez had four goals for the Lancers.

Burroughs 19, Burbank 4--Alfonso Tucay had six goals, and Damon Wierbillis and Greg Paggi each had five for the Indians (15-4, 3-0) in a Foothill League match at Burbank. Goalie Mike Denny had 18 saves as Burroughs won its eighth consecutive match.

Calabasas 10, Cate 5--Jamey Krauss had three goals, and Matt Shapira and Reid Roberts each had two for the Coyotes (10-4, 4-2) in a Frontier League match. Mitch Wechsler had nine saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Santa Clara 2, Pepperdine 1--Jeanne Huchting took a crossing pass from Emmy Barr and headed the ball past freshman goalie Sumon Nicole in the 65th minute to snap a 1-1 tie and carry the Broncos (10-3-1, 2-1) to a West Coast Conference victory at Pepperdine. Jennifer Evans had tied the score for the Waves (3-8-2, 1-5) with an unassisted goal two minutes earlier.

Moorpark 2, Cuesta 2--Bonnie Borup and Michelle Ranuschio teamed up on both goals for the Raiders (7-3-3, 2-0-2) in a Western State Conference match.

Borup scored on a first-half header off a corner kick by Ranuschio, and Ranuschio scored in the second half following a pass by Borup.

Moorpark outshot Cuesta, 18-6, and Raider goalie Joleen Redublo had five saves.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mission 1, Santa Barbara 1--Jose Ballesteros scored 15 minutes into the second half for unranked Mission (6-1-4, 1-1-2) against No. 1-ranked Santa Barbara (9-0-1, 3-0-1) in a Western State Conference match at Santa Barbara.

Mission’s Israel Cabrera missed a penalty shot in the first half. Goalie Diego Valencia had four saves.

Paco Andrade tied the game at the 89th minute for Santa Barbara.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Santa Barbara 12, Westlake 6--Pilar Montgomery won all three of her sets to lead Santa Barbara (14-0) in a nonleague match at home.
