DANA POINT : Runaway Car Totals Storefront

A car careened into the front of Pacific Water Sports on Doheny Park Road, slightly injuring a passenger and sending glass and brick flying 30 feet into the store, sheriff’s deputies said Monday.

“Nobody was in the store, but they took out the front end of the building,” owner Tracey Meyers, 29, said of Sunday’s accident.

The accident sent bricks flying onto some of the store’s boats, scratching them up, Meyers said.

“Half the front of the building is ruined and it blew out the door and the glass,” he said. “It would have been something to be here. It would have been like a snow of glass.”

The car was driven by a 42-year-old man. The brakes on his 1965 Mustang apparently failed as he was driving south on Doheny Park Road shortly after 5 p.m., deputies said.

A passenger suffered minor injuries. Employees had left the store an hour before the accident.

The store’s mascot, a lizard whose cage sits five feet from a picture window, survived unharmed, Meyers said. Repairs of the building’s facade will take about a week, he said.
