PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Loara Counts on Lappin in Victory Over Century

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Loara quarterback Archie Lappin leaned over and whispered in Joey Iantorno’s ear.

What did Lappin tell his center?

Lappin said, “Oh my God, Joey! I forgot the snap count.”

It was about the only thing Loara forgot Friday night as the Saxons scored a 33-7 victory over Century in an Empire League game at Santa Ana Stadium.

After Lappin was told the count, it was a snap for him.

The junior quarterback then handed the ball to Marcus McBride, who in turn gave it to Clint Collins. Collins raced 63 yards for the score to give Loara a 26-7 third-quarter lead.

Collins scored two other touchdowns on pass plays of 57 and 40 yards from Lappin.

The junior wide receiver caught three passes for 113 yards, and Lappin completed 10 of 21 for 219 yards and two touchdowns.

McBride, a 5-foot-11, 173-pound senior running back, had touchdown runs of 40 and 19 yards, and gained 100 yards in 10 carries.

Loara (2-6, 1-2) lost two running backs before McBride entered the game late in the first quarter.

John Duhon and Harry Redmond went out on Loara’s first possession. Duhon was sidelined because of a slight concussion, and Redmond left because of a shoulder injury.

That was after Century (1-6-1, 0-3) struck for an early score on the third play of the game.

Century quarterback Jerry Diaz raced 58 yards untouched on the option play, to give the Centurions a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes and 16 seconds left in the first quarter.

Loara then came back to score 33 consecutive points.
