Ineligible Player Costs San Fernando 2 Wins

The San Fernando High football team has forfeited two games for using an ineligible player.

Sergio Rubio, a special teams player, played in last Friday night’s game against Taft before school officials determined he is academically ineligible. Rubio also played in a victory over Poly on Sept. 22.

Softball--The high school from which Karen Walker-Deegan graduated was misidentified in Wednesday’s Times. She attended El Camino Real.

The forfeits drop San Fernando’s record to 3-5, 3-2 in Northwest Valley Conference play. San Fernando also faces additional penalties from the City Section because the Tigers used an ineligible player in their three other conference victories.

Roger Bausley, a transfer from Granada Hills, was declared ineligible last week because of an administrative error. A City rules committee will meet Monday to discuss if penalties are warranted.

Basketball

Trenton Cross, slated to be Cal State Northridge’s starting point guard, practiced Monday for the first time this season. Cross is recovering from injuries suffered in a July 30 car accident.

Cross-Country

Canyon High’s girls’ team, based on its third-place finish in the sweepstakes race of the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational, has replaced Thousand Oaks as the top Division I team in the state.

The Nordhoff boys (Division III) and Louisville girls (Division IV) are top-ranked in their divisions.

Softball

The first Women’s Professional Fastpitch draft included 13 players from the Valley region.

Sheila Cornell, a former Taft High and UCLA star, was the fifth choice overall.

Barbara Jordan of Granada Hills High and Cal State Northridge was the eighth pick. Kim Maher (Buena High), a third baseman/outfielder, was taken 12th.

Other selections from the region are Amy Chellevold (Thousand Oaks High), 27th; Jenny Dalton (Glendale), 28th; Karen Walker-Deegan (Taft), 36th; Scia Maumausolo (Cal State Northridge), 44th; Shannon Jones (Northridge), 65th; Deb DiMeglio (Palmdale), 78th; Vicky Rios (Northridge), 79th; Nichole Victoria (Camarillo), 86th; Krista Gomez (Alemany), 87th and Heather Medearis (Hart), 96th.

Each team was allowed to protect two players from the draft for geographic considerations. Among them were Beth Calcante (Newbury Park/Northridge), Priscilla Rouse (Northridge) and Amy Windmiller (Northridge).

Sites of the six franchises have not been announced.

Hart High pitcher Mary Colleran has made a verbal commitment to Boston University. Colleran had a 20-8 record with a 0.56 earned-run-average as a junior.

Soccer

Steve Hoffman has been hired as Agoura High boys’ coach, Athletic Director John Crow said.
