COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Wins Water Polo Title
Andre Doria Araujo scored his sixth goal of the game with 37 seconds left in the second overtime to give Golden West a 12-11 victory over Grossmont in the championship game of the California Community College Water Polo Championships on Saturday at Merced College.
The Rustlers (30-4-1) won their seventh consecutive State title. It was also the 13th overall title in 16 years for Golden West.
Golden West fell behind early, trailing Grossmont, 3-0, after a pair of John Massow goals. Golden West took the lead midway through the second quarter and never trailed, although the score was tied four times. Grossmont finishes 29-5-1.
The Rustlers reached the final after a tight 12-11 victory over Citrus (34-4-1) in the semifinals. Araujo had four goals in the game.
In the College of the Desert men’s tournament:
Cypress 68, College of the Desert 62--Jason Krauss scored 15 points to lead Cypress (3-2) past College of the Desert (2-2) to win the tournament. Teammate Gil Gonzales added 14 points.
In the Fullerton Classic men’s basketball tournament:
Dixie (Utah) 102, Fullerton 71--Scott Davis scored a game-high 19 points, but the Hornets came up short in the championship game. Fullerton trailed, 58-27, at halftime.
Saddleback 94, L.A. Harbor 77--Anthony Carter scored 38 points to lead Saddleback (2-2) in the consolation championship. Teammate Michael Riggins added 20 points for the Gauchos.
In a nonconference game:
Orange Coast 88, Imperial Valley 75--David Downs scored 18 points to lead Orange Coast (4-1) in a nonconference game. Adrian Reyes had 17 points for the Pirates.
In the Mt. San Jacinto women’s basketball tournament:
Saddleback 81, Mt. San Jacinto 35--Shanna Renken had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Gauchos (4-0) won the tournament championship. Cha-ron Walker added 16 points and 12 rebounds for Saddleback.
In another tournament game:
Irvine Valley 81, Desert 28--Heather Robinson had 21 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds for Irvine Valley (4-0), which led, 42-9, at the half. Alison Carr added 18 points and Juliana Castro 17 for Irvine Valley.
In the State cross-country championships:
Sanchez races to third place finish--Adalberto Sanchez of Saddleback College finished third at the California Community College Cross-Country Championships at Fresno City College.
Sanchez finished the four-mile course at Fresno’s Woodward Park in 20 minutes 23 seconds, only nine seconds behind the winner.
Rancho Santiago finished seventh among men’s teams, getting top-30 finishes from Franky Hernandez (22nd in 21:09), Carlos Ramirez (28th) and Juan Medrano (29th), both coming in at 21:28.
For the women, Elly Estrada led Rancho Santiago to a 10th-place finish by completing the 5,000-meter course in 19:18.
