A fire fueled by strong winds left a firefighter with cuts on his hand and caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to a two-story house, authorities said Tuesday.

Employees at a nearby bank saw smoke coming out of the upper floor of the house in the 5700 block of Castle Drive and called 911 at 12:50 p.m. Monday, Battalion Chief Chuck Burney said.

Firefighters arrived and saw five- to six-foot flames shooting out of the upstairs windows, Burney said. While battling the blaze, firefighter Sam Moses cut his right hand when he tried to enter the home through a front window, Burney said. Moses was taken to a nearby hospital, where he received several stitches and was released, officials said.

About 30 firefighters battled the blaze for 20 minutes before it was under control, Burney said. Investigators estimated the fire damaged about a quarter of the house. Its cause was not known.
