Three-Car Pileup Blamed on ‘Freak’ Conditions

Three people received minor injuries in a three-car pileup on Pacific Coast Highway near Point Mugu early Friday morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

All three were treated at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard for minor injuries and released.

The accident occurred a quarter of a mile north of Mugu Rock when driver Faustino Lopez, 43, of Oxnard stopped his car when he believed he spotted a traffic accident ahead, Officer Dave Cockrill said.

A car driven by Odonel Rodriguez, 27, of Oxnard plowed into the back of Lopez’s car, and then a pickup driven by Felipe Dominguez, 58, of Malibu collided with Rodriguez’s car, Cockrill said.

“Apparently what was happening out there was the victims were driving along and hitting a drastic temperature change that was causing the windows on the inside [of the vehicles] to fog up,” he said. “It was just one of those freak things.”

Officers found no evidence of the accident that Lopez said prompted him to stop, Cockrill said.
