OXNARD : Parade Today to Honor Our Lady of Guadalupe

Share

More than 200 Oxnard residents are expected to join today in a procession in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The parade is based on the reported appearance of the Virgin Mary to a startled Indian laborer in central Mexico in 1531.

During the procession, which will begin at 10 a.m. at Rose Avenue School, 220 S. Driskill Ave., children will re-enact the roles of the Virgin Mary and Juan Diego, the Catholic convert said to have encountered the Virgin on Tepeyac Hill.

The procession will end at 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, 500 N. Juanita Ave., when Mass will be celebrated.

Maria Martin, the event’s coordinator, said many people at the procession will wear indigenous clothing resembling that worn by Diego in the 16th Century.

“This is a moment of great happiness, and people like to participate because it is part of their tradition,” Martin said.
