COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Rallies, Advances to State Volleyball Final

Golden West lost the first game and trailed by seven points in the second before rallying to beat Long Beach in four games in the winners’ bracket final of the women’s volleyball state tournament Saturday at Cerritos.

Long Beach won the first game, 15-13, but Golden West came back to win, 15-9, 15-8, 15-9. Jessica Redding had 15 kills and Ursula Luna added 12 for the Rustlers (24-2), the two-time defending state champions.

Golden West advances to the title match today at 5 p.m. Long Beach falls to the elimination bracket along with Pasadena and Kings River.

In the women’s state soccer championships:

Santa Rosa 2, Cypress 1--Wendy Polnaszek’s header off a corner kick from Val Brice tied the score late in the first half, but Santa Rosa scored the game-winner midway through the second half to eliminate the Chargers (15-3-3) in a semifinal.

In the Orange Coast Kiwanis men’s basketball tournament:

Long Beach 72, Orange Coast 69--Earnest Douglas had two late three-pointers for Long Beach (6-3), which won the tournament for the second consecutive season.

Matt Ambrose and David Downs made the all-tournament team for Orange Coast (3-6).

Golden West 78, Imperial Valley 64--Rod Scheuerman scored 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Golden West (4-5). Teammate Ray Jimmerson set a Golden West single-game record with seven three-pointers and finished with 21 points.

In the Grossmont tournament:

Rancho Santiago 74, Cerritos 64--Chris Rose scored 18 points and Marcus Lemons added 16 as Rancho Santiago won the third-place game. Ramon Alliman scored 13 points and John Surface added 12 for the Dons (6-3).

In the Cypress women’s basketball tournament:

San Diego Mesa 70, Cypress 43--Jody Howard had 10 points and six rebounds in a losing cause for Cypress (3-5) in a consolation game.

In the Cuesta tournament:

Orange Coast 80, Cosumnes River 59--Jamie Shine scored 23 points as Orange Coast (7-2) won the tournament championship. Adrienne Botana added 19 points to help Orange Coast hand Cosumnes River (8-1) its first loss of the season.

In nonconference action:

Saddleback 85, Glendale 40--Cha-Ron Walker scored 27 points to lead Saddleback, which remains undefeated at 6-0.
