Westside : Rights Group Asks Probe of INS Raid
A civil rights group representing Mexican Americans is demanding that the Immigration and Naturalization Service investigate the way in which its officers conducted a raid Monday on a Hollywood sewing shop.
The officers, who had a search warrant, detained 50 workers believed to be employed illegally by G & G Sewing Contractors. The workers were transported to an INS detention center in San Pedro and many face deportation, said Richard Rogers, district INS director. He said that 13 of the workers have been released.
The Mexican American Political Assn. says the INS unlawfully detained about 40 legal workers in the raid. Everyone was handcuffed and the children of some workers were left stranded at school, said Hector Brolo, the association’s president.
Rogers asked anyone with evidence of rights violations to contact the INS.
