SEASON AT A GLANCE: Bernaldo has rebounded since his season was nearly ended after he contracted mononucleosis in October. He placed 15th in the Ventura County championships in his first race back, then won the Frontier League and Southern Section Division III titles. He finished third in the Division III race of the State championships on Nov. 25 and was a surprising seventh in Saturday’s Foot Locker West regional in Fresno to qualify for this Saturday’s national championships in San Diego.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Bernaldo timed 15 minutes 24 seconds over the 5,000-meter course at Woodward Park to cut 21 seconds from his time at the State meet on the same course. “I had been telling people all week that I was going to finish among the top eight,” Bernaldo said. “But it’s one thing to say you expect it to happen and another to actually do it.”
