BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ortiz Follows His Miss With Game-Winning Shot

Calvary Chapel’s Joe Ortiz missed a three-pointer with five seconds left that would have beaten Laguna Beach for the title of the La Quinta boys’ basketball tournament Friday. As luck would have it, the ball bounced off the rim back to Ortiz, who then sank a three-pointer with one second left, giving the Eagles a 57-55 victory and the tournament championship.

Ortiz had five three-pointers and finished with 25 points.

Laguna Beach’s Damion Pugh had put the Artists ahead, 55-54, with 45 seconds left by making one of two free-throws.

In the third-place game:

La Quinta 63, Garden Grove 49--Todd Butt scored 20 points to lead La Quinta. David Williams and Jose Gonzales each had 16 points for Garden Grove.

In pool play of the Century Shootout tournament:

Century 61, Santa Fe 46--Jason Farris scored 16 points and Hector Beltran had 15 for Century (4-1), which advanced to the title game to play San Diego Mt. Carmel.

San Diego Mt. Carmel 63, Fullerton 59--Sam Mankiewicz scored 15 points for Fullerton (4-4).

In semifinals of the Costa Mesa tournament:

Mission Viejo 76, Los Amigos 33--Junior forward Gabriel Burt scored 19 points for Mission Viejo. Commander King had eight assists for the Diablos (7-0).

Santiago 51, Southern California Christian 42--Tony Dixon had 20 points and Frank Jiminez 11 for Santiago (4-0), which plays Mission Viejo tonight in the final.

In the Glendora tournament:

Brea Olinda 56, Rowland Heights Rowland 52--John Heredia made two free-throws with eight seconds left to give Brea Olinda a four-point lead. Sean Wink led the Wildcats (6-1) with 17 points.

In the Pasadena Poly tournament:

Sierra Madre Maranatha 64, St. Margaret’s 41--Rob Miltner scored 25 points for St. Margaret’s (0-5) in a consolation game.

In the Trabuco Hills tournament:

Trabuco Hills 71, Chino Hills Ayala 59--Nick Punto scored 27 points and made four three-pointers and Brenton Junge had 15 rebounds for Trabuco Hills (4-3), which will play Capistrano Valley in the consolation final.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Corona del Mar 51, Pacifica 42--Adam Klinke scored 15 points and Brian Coleman added 14 for Corona del Mar (3-2).

El Modena 75, Brethren Christian 65--George Gurrola scored 16 points for El Modena (4-1), which outscored the Warriors, 23-16, in the third quarter to take a 61-51 lead. Tommy Li had a game-high 17 points for Brethren Christian (0-2).

Valencia 37, Troy 36--Salim Aqil made an eight-foot jump shot with four seconds left to give Valencia (4-1) a one-point lead.
