Perry Watson wasn’t around for most of Detroit’s 11 years of frustration against Big Ten opposition.

But the Titans’ third-year coach wasn’t about to underestimate the impact of his team’s 63-61 victory Sunday over Michigan State at East Lansing, Mich.

Carl Pickett scored 21 points as the Titans (4-1) held on to beat the Spartans (3-4), ending a 20-game losing streak against Big Ten teams.

“Any time we can beat a Big Ten school, it’s a great win for our program,” said Watson, a former Michigan assistant.

Detroit hadn’t beaten a Big Ten team since a 77-67 victory at Minnesota in December 1984.

Guard Ray Weathers led Michigan State with 13 points.
