BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Holds On, 70-64

Fountain Valley raced to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and held on to beat Trabuco Hills, 70-64, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Tuesday at Fountain Valley.

The Barons led, 21-11, at the end of the first quarter. Nathan Strange scored 22 points for Fountain Valley (3-4) and Nick Punto had 30 for Trabuco Hills.

In other nonleague games:

Calvary Chapel 79, El Modena 67--Nate Morton scored 28 points and Joe Ortiz had 20 to lead Calvary Chapel (8-0). Kevin Falconer had 12 points for the Eagles.

Tommy Ngo scored 27 points for El Modena (4-2).

Bolsa Grande 88, Santa Ana 73--Crispin Chavez scored 37 points for host Bolsa Grande (3-5), which used its full-court press to take a 28-12 lead after one quarter.

Pacific Shores 58, St. Michael’s Prep 48--Roldan Chapple scored 19 points for Pacific Shores (1-1). Richard Yang had 18 points and 11 rebounds for St. Michael’s (3-3).

St. Margaret’s 61, San Diego Army-Navy Academy 36--Rob Miltner scored 21 points to lead St. Margaret’s (1-5), which led, 18-4, after the first quarter.

In the Irvine World News tournament:

Huntington Beach 73, Kennedy 58--Matt Jones scored 28 points and had four three-pointers for Huntington Beach.

Estancia 55, Dana Hills 46--Dane Plock had 13 points and five assists for Estancia (7-0). John Maraya had five of his seven points in the fourth quarter as Estancia outscored Dana Hills 12-5.

Woodbridge 74, San Ramon California 48--Chris Burgess scored 25 points for host Woodbridge in the first round. The Warriors (6-2) play Pomona today at 7:30 p.m. in the second round.

Irvine 65, Sunny Hills 43--Amir Rahimi scored 19 points to lead Irvine (3-4), which was ahead, 37-18, at the half.

University 106, La Habra 79--Ryan Schachter scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds to lead University (4-2). Teammate Eric Palmer scored 13 points and had 11 assists for the Trojans.

In the Sonora tournament:

Edison 64, Western 52--Edison (3-3) made 16 of 26 free throws and Western made two of eight. Matt Patterson and Brian Slusser had 14 points for Edison. Western is 1-5.

Foothill 57, Savanna 48--John Brittingham scored 15 points to lead Foothill (2-3).

Rancho Alamitos 67, Westminster 51--Corey Brown scored 21 points to lead Rancho Alamitos (1-6) to its first victory of the season.

In the Express League:

Harbor City Gateway Christian 56, Huntington Beach Claremont 52--Claremont closed to within one with 5 1/2 minutes remaining, but Gateway Christian made 10 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away. Ryan Cronkite had 14 points and nine rebounds for Claremont (7-2, 0-1).

In the Murrieta tournament:

Marina 63, Escondido 48--Steve Bolton had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Marina (3-3), which led, 31-17, at the half.

Hemet West Valley 76, San Clemente 75 (2 OT)--Semaj Johnson’s three-pointer at the end of regulation tied the score for San Clemente, but West Valley won the game at the line in overtime. Jan Tatala scored 31 points and Johnson had 12 for the Tritons (3-3).

In the Troy tournament:

Cypress 58, Buena Park 47--Chad Boberg had 24 points, Matt Sage 14 points and 10 rebounds and Wes Bunn 10 points and eight rebounds for Cypress (4-1), which led by 10 at the half.
