COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Ross’ Three-Pointer in Overtime Gives Rancho Santiago a Victory

Tremain Ross made a three-pointer with three seconds left in overtime to give Rancho Santiago a one-point lead, then the Dons held on for a 72-71 victory over Los Angeles Valley in the first round of the Pasadena men’s basketball tournament Thursday at Pasadena City College.

Rancho Santiago (8-3) advanced to the semifinals when Denny Hoang of Los Angeles Valley missed a 25-footer as time ran out.

Ross, who missed a 10-foot baseline jumper as time ran out in regulation, finished with 20 points. Chris Rose also scored 20 points for Rancho Santiago, including four in overtime.

Vernon Simmons scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to key Los Angeles Valley’s comeback from a 10-point deficit.

In another Pasadena tournament game:

Cuesta 81, Fullerton 69--Chris Campbell scored 17 points for Fullerton.

In the Cypress tournament:

Cypress 81, Vandenberg AFB 67--Jason Kraus scored 26 points and Gil Gonzales had 19 points and five three-pointers for Cypress (7-5).

Long Beach City 75, Golden West 63 (OT)--Golden West came back from a 12-point deficit with 5:35 remaining to force overtime, but was outscored, 12-0, in the extra period. Rod Scheuerman scored 14 for the Rustlers (7-8).

In the Glendale tournament:

Orange Coast 73, Canyons 57--Matt Ambrose scored 20 points for Orange Coast.
