A pass by Chris Therien hit off the skate of New Jersey center Petr Sykora for the tying goal, and a shot by Bill Guerin off the defenseman’s skate landed in the net at 2:13 of overtime, sending the Devils past the Flyers, 5-4, Tuesday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory was only the second in the Devils’ last eight games (2-6-0) but it was also their third this season against Philadelphia.

Tampa Bay 6, Winnipeg 3--Chris Gratton’s power-play goal broke a tie, and the Lightning set a team record with six third-period goals at St. Petersburg, Fla.

NHL Notes

Hartford traded right wing Jocelyn Lemieux to New Jersey and acquired defenseman Jeff Brown from Vancouver in a three-team deal. Hartford sent Lemieux and its second-round pick in 1998 to New Jersey for center Jim Dowd and a second-round choice in 1997. The Whalers then sent Dowd, defenseman Fran Kucera and their second-round pick in 1997 to Vancouver for Brown and a third-round choice in 1998. . . . Calgary right wing Ron Stern was suspended by the NHL for four games for slashing St. Louis defenseman Jeff Norton.
