COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Griffin’s Late Free Throws Key Irvine Valley Victory

Tumala Griffin made four free throws in the closing moments to help host Irvine Valley to a 78-72 victory over San Diego City in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday.

Irvine Valley (8-6) led at the half, 34-25, and increased the lead to as much as 16 early in the second half. San Diego then rallied and the Knights led, 68-66, with about four minutes to play.

Griffin (five points) made two free throws to put Irvine Valley ahead for good, 72-70, with 2 minutes 30 seconds left. He added two more free throws in the final minute.

Demitrius Zeigler made five of seven three-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points for Irvine Valley. Matt Moore had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Tony Booten and J.C. Timmons added 12 points each for the Lasers.

In another nonconference men’s game:

Cerritos 92, Rancho Santiago 78--Rancho Santiago had beaten Cerritos, 74-64, in the third-place game of the Grossmont tournament but the host Falcons wanted some revenge.

David Henry made eight of nine shots from the field and finished with a game-high 22 points for Cerritos. Chad Bell had 21.

Ramon Alliman had 15 and Tremain Ross and Todd Wilson had 14 each for Rancho Santiago (8-5). Chris Rose, Rancho Santiago’s sophomore center who started the week averaging 17 points, was limited to seven. He had 18 in the victory over Cerritos.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 69, Mt. San Jacinto 50--Karla Dominguez scored 19 and Cari Remmel added 17 for host Rancho Santiago (4-7). Remmel also had 13 rebounds. Aidee Pacheco had eight points and 14 rebound for Rancho Santiago.
