BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ventura Has Something in Reserve

With its starters limited to 18 points, the reserves on the Ventura College men’s basketball team shone brightly Thursday night in a 91-83 nonconference victory over visiting Long Beach City.

Gerald Zimmerman scored 20 points, and Che Lugo and Jamal Cobbs added 15 and 11 as the defending state champion Pirates (14-0) won their 22nd consecutive game and their 51st in 52 games.

Long Beach City, which defeated Ventura for the 1994 state title, is 9-7.

BOYS

Harvard-Westlake 60, Andrew Jackson 51--The Wolverines handled the Colonials’ pressing defense to capture the consolation championship of the City of Palms Basketball Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Jackson employed a full-court press from the start against the Wolverines (7-1), who lost in the first round Monday.

Jarron Collins had 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. His brother, Jason, added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Washington Union 85, Canoga Park 52--Carlos Harper’s 26 points and 13 rebounds were not nearly enough for the Hunters (5-2) in a first-round game of the Buchanan tournament in Fresno.

Canoga Park, ranked fifth in the region by The Times, showed the effects of a 13-day layoff by scoring only three points in the first quarter and committing 28 turnovers in the game.

Aaron Lasley had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Hunters, while Alonzo Robinson led Washington Union (6-0) with 26 points.

El Camino Real 59, Marshall 48--Cameron Henderson had 29 points and nine rebounds for the Conquistadores in a semifinal game of the Chaminade tournament.

Hason Hoke and Jason Fox each added 12 points for El Camino Real (8-3), which led, 30-24, at halftime.

Robinson Perez scored 17 points for the Barristers (10-3).

Rio Mesa 60, Rainier Beach (Wash.) 49--Scott Fujita scored 24 points and Tyrone Nunnery added 12 for the Spartans (6-3) in a semifinal game of the Chaminade tournament. Jimmy Hickerson had 10 points for Rio Mesa.

Chaminade 85, Cathedral City 53--Arash Safaei scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds, and Brett Brownson added 14 points and 11 rebounds as Chaminade (6-7) won the seventh-place game of its own tournament.

Every Chaminade player scored, led by Scott Long, who came off the bench to post 13 points.

Grant 77, Leuzinger 67--Donald Patterson scored 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to lead Grant (2-6) in a quarterfinal game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Freddy Ramirez added 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for Grant.

Crespi 75, Nordhoff 49--Dennis Fox scored eight of his 12 points in the second quarter and Crespi blew open a close contest in the third quarter of a consolation game of the Valencia tournament.

Trailing, 20-11, at the end of the first quarter, the Celts (3-5) outscored Nordhoff, 45-13, in the second and third periods.

GIRLS

Thousand Oaks 61, Washington 51--Junior forward Jenn Detmer scored 28 points and sophomore forward Courtney Miller added 16 for the Lancers (6-3) in a pool-play game of the Santa Barbara tournament.

Thousand Oaks outscored Washington, 21-7, in the second quarter and led by 20 points, 53-33, after three quarters.

Paraclete 59, Littlerock 57--Monica Flores hit a three-point shot with 17 seconds left to cap Paraclete’s come-from-behind victory in a first-round game of the Saugus tournament.

Littlerock (4-5) led, 57-49, with approximately three minutes left, but the Lobos did not score again. Kristin Phillips scored 24 points for Littlerock and Kim Whisler had 23 for Paraclete.

Flores added 12 for the Spirits.

Moorpark 54 Glendale 48-- Tracy Milburn led Moorpark (7-0) with 16 points, six assists and five steals in a first-round game of the Saugus tournament.

North Hollywood 64, Channel Islands 33--Samantha Fargeon scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds, and freshman Tashean Thomas scored 10 points to pace the Huskies (4-2) in a fifth-place semifinal of the Simi Valley tournament.

Notre Dame 51, Culver City 32--Lourdes Slinsky had 16 points and Stacey Phillips added 14 and 10 assists for the Knights (5-5) in a consolation game of the Simi Valley tournament.
